Mind numbing

It sure takes a long time to get to Japan. This is my second time with Sonos to Japan, with my last trip two years ago.

My trip actually started the night before the flight, since I drove to Missy's house for the night so I could be assured to get through any morning traffic. I live a little over 2 hours east of Missy, and travel through Sacramento, Vallejo, and other jamming spots just getting that far.

Tuesday morning arrived, and Missy, Kathie, and Kathie's daughter Lexi all carpooled to the BART station to ride to the San Francisco airport. Sonos gathered there, distributed luggage (everyone got bell equipment to check in addition to their personal stuff), and headed for security.

Then we boarded the plane for a 12-hour flight. That's a LONG flight. Trying to fill that time is a job in itself. I watched all (or part) of 5 feature-length films, had two meals (which were quite good, actually), and paced around the plane a few times. But you can only do that for so long and it becomes mind-numbing. One of the movies was really good - I recommend "The Illusionist" for a well-told story. The other films were pretty bad, but what else was there to do? The funny thing is that Ruben, who was seated facing the bulkhead partition, didn't even realize he had a personal movie screen until 8 hours into the flight.

The lady next to me was fun to talk to. She just barely made the plane, having been delayed out of Portland, Oregon for 1.5 hours. She was heading home to Japan, and shared that she had been practicing her English skills at a school in Portland, and then had gone sight-seeing to Seattle and on to Juneau. We drew an imaginary map together of her travels, and then I shared our Sonos itinerary with her. We drew another imaginary map, and she showed me how we made a zigzag across Japan. She was very nice, and wished us all well on our travels. Visiting with her made the trip a lot more enjoyable too.

Anyway, it was a *very* long day. Add to the flight some more time to get our huge amount of checked luggage (remember that we brought all our bell equipment too), get through customs, and take an hour-long bus ride to the hotel, and we were pretty wiped out. Okay - I was, anyway. It was a good thing that the sun was setting as we arrived at our hotel rooms, because we all finally got a night's sleep. I know the local time was real, but to us who had been going since 5:30am in California, this day with its extra hours sure was l-o-n-g.
